Malcolm Ngatai - - - New Zealand SuperStock Champion 2009
Malcolm would like to say "Thanks Heaps to Scott for sending the letter of congratulations."
Yes at Kaiapoi's Woodford Glen Speedway on Sunday 4th January 2009 we made our distinct impression within the history of speedway racing in New Zealand. Only 18 months after debuting the NEW 19c SuperStock we took out the most prestigous award the class offers in NZ ... The New Zealand SuperStock Championship!
Winning this title sets a few new entries within the record books too. Malcolm is the first Cantabrian to win this event (and only the second South Islander) in its 43 year history. Plus this event is very difficult to win at the best of times but he achieved it with a massive 11point margin over the nearest challenger.
So how were Malcolm and the team able to stamp there ownership on the title and what are his thoughts now that he's had time to reflect back on it all?
Lets ask him a few questions ...
Q) What was your first sense of feeling upon winning and how long did it take to sink-in that you are now the NZ Champion?
A) "It's STILL sinking in! --- I knew I had won the title the moment I passed the chequered flag in the final heat. I felt shivering down my spine!"
Q) What special planning or preparation did you employ prior to the NZ Champs?
A) "We fitted a brand new clutch plus every bearing in the car was renewed. Basically anything we thought may give us problems was replaced. It was a massive service such as we would carry out on the car in preparation for the beginning of the season."
Q) How special is it for you personally, to not only win the NZ Champs but also to win it at your home track?
A) "MEAN ! MASSIVE ! --- It was always my aim to win the title at some stage but this was great especially since our club had never won it before."
Q) To whom do you owe the most gratitude in getting your racing career to where it is now?
A) "DAVE ROSEWARNE --- All the help he has provided and for talking me into it. All the back up, the good motors he provides, the on-going support and believing I could do the job!"
Q) You've had frequent trips to race in the North Island to get "dialled-in", How much has this helped?
A) "HEAPS ! MAJOR ! --- It got me up to speed where I also learnt about the competitors, how they raced and how fast they were."
Q) Do you see yourself racing Internationally in the future?
A) "Yes definately --- to England, already had the invite! Sounds like Holland for the Dutch final is happening as well."
Q) In closing, is there anything you would like to add?
A) "Yep --- Big thanks to Jason Smith for all the on-track help during the NZ champs, he helped make it easier for me to get through. Thanks to my crew chief James, ALL the crew and thanks to the supporters. Plus if it wasn't for our sponsors we wouldn't be there."
